Alabama Eye & Cataract Center, P.C. and Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. are now both conveniently located together at UAB Highlands on the campus of The University of Alabama in Birmingham Medical Center offering patients requiring eye care comprehensive and advanced vision correction services. Our eye physicians and surgeons are available for patients in need of routine eye exams who may need eyeglasses and contacts as well as those desiring consultation for laser vision correction, cataract surgery, and corneal surgery.  In addition, our physicians are also available to patients requiring consultation for complex eye disease and vision problems associated with prior cataract or Lasik surgery performed elsewhere. Marc Michelson, M.D. is a board certified fellowship-trained subspecialist in the areas of corneal diseases and surgery, cataract surgery and lens implants and refractive surgery including LASIK surgery.

Jennifer Michelson, M.D. is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who performs LASIK eye surgery, cataract & lens Implant surgery. Drs. Michelson are assisted by an experienced technical staff, each one a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or Technician, accredited by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.

About Michelson Laser Vision, Inc.
It all began in 1989 when Dr. Michelson was appointed to become the fifth clinical investigator in the United States to conduct Phase 3 clinical trials with Summit Technology to perform some of the first laser vision correction procedures in the world. In that year, Dr. Michelson performed the very first excimer laser treatment in Birmingham, Alabama using the laser to treat a glaucoma patient. The first myopic vision correction procedure in Alabama, PRK (Photorefractive Keratoplasty), was performed by Dr. Michelson in 1991 and the rest is history. Dr. Michelson and his staff continued to conduct numerous clinical trials including some of the initial LASIK studies beginning in 1995. When the FDA approved the excimer laser for Photorefractive Keratoplasty in 1994 and LASIK in 1999, Dr. Michelson and his staff were already on the forefront of innovation in laser vision correction. Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. was established in 1999 to provide laser vision correction with “World Class Care” offering patients the best technology available to reduce or eliminate their needs for corrective eyewear. Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. has kept the pace of technological advancement in laser vision correction. Since 1999, we have upgraded and utilized over five generations of lasers to ensure that our patients have access to the most advanced laser technology. In 2014, Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. relocated to The Medical Center at UAB Highlands on the campus of the University of Alabama (UAB) in Birmingham.

Dr. Michelson pioneered laser eye surgery for the correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism and was the first ophthalmologist in Alabama to perform laser vision correction including PRK and LASIK. Dr. Michelson provides comfortable and convenient outpatient “no stitch, no patch, no injection” Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery and specializes in performing “Premium Services” in eye surgery such as implantation of toric lens implants to correct astigmatism and presbyopia vision (near vision) correcting cataract lens implants such as the Crystalens® Accommodating Lens Implant, the Tecnis® Multifocal Lens Implant and the ReSTOR® Multifocal Lens Implant.

About Your First Visit
We strive to provide you and your family with the best possible patient experience. Please arrive to the office a few minutes early so that our staff can meet you and properly gather all necessary information. In advance, you may print out and complete the new patient packet located in the Patient Forms section of this website.

About Insurance
Alabama Eye & Cataract Center, P.C. participates with most major insurance companies. However, it is very important that you understand your specific insurance policy and adhere to any requirements such as obtaining a referral prior to your appointment. Please call your insurance company for any questions about your policy including your copayments and deductables.

Should you need to reschedule your appointment, we would ask for 24 hours notice.

Emergency Care
During business hours, patients should call any of our office locations to speak with a staff member. After business hours, our answering service is available to route your call to a member of our on-call patient care team. Please note, any patient with a medical emergency is advised to dial 911 to receive emergency medical care.
