Marc Michelson, M.D. is a Corneal Specialist, Cataract & LASIK Eye Surgeon at Alabama Eye & Cataract Center, P.C. and Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. in Birmingham located at UAB Highlands on the campus of the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) Medical Center.  In addition, Dr. Michelson is Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Medicine. Dr. Michelson completed his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned his Medical Degree from the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine followed by an internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) and then completed a Residency in Ophthalmology at the Eye Foundation Hospital of the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Michelson further advanced his eye surgery training to become a Corneal Surgeon and Specialist by completing a Fellowship in Cornea and External Disease at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Michelson founded the first Refractive Laser Eye Surgery Center in Alabama at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham where he conducted pioneering clinical research in Laser Eye Surgery to assist in the clinical trials required to present data to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval of the Excimer Laser. Dr. Michelson performed his first Laser Vision Correction treatments on the human eyes in 1991. He has the distinction of being the first eye surgeon in the State of Alabama to perform Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), Automated Lamellar Keratectomy (ALK), and LASIK.

At Alabama Eye & Cataract Center, P.C., Dr. Michelson performs laser cataract and lens implants Birmingham and is regarded as a distinguished Alabama cataract surgeon. He is among the first to provide laser cataract surgery with advanced technology lens implants including toric lens implants to correct astigmatism and near vision presbyopia correcting cataract lens implants such as the Crystalens® Accommodating Lens Implant, the Tecnis® Multifocal Lens Implant and the ReSTOR® Multifocal Lens Implant for the correction of the near vision focusing problem-“presbyopia”- to help Alabama cataract surgery patients eliminate their dependence on eyeglasses, reading glasses and bifocals.

Dr. Michelson is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a Fellow of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Royal Society of Medicine, the Castroviejo Society and the International Society of Refractive Surgery, and he has been elected by his peers for inclusion in "Best Doctors in America®" continuously from 1994-2014. He is a member of the International Association for Training and Research in Ophthalmology Surgery and has published numerous scientific papers on Cataract Surgery and Laser Eye Surgery. Dr. Michelson is a frequent speaker on LASIK, Cataract Surgery and Lens Implants and has presented numerous lectures at major Ophthalmic Symposia and meetings. He has taught and performed LASIK Surgery and Cataract Surgery around the world.  Dr. Michelson was awarded “Best Paper of Session” in 2012 at the annual American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery annual meeting on the impact of corneal wavefronts on the ability of the eye to pseudoaccomodate as well as predicting the ability of an eye to visually tolerance a Multifocal Intraocular Lens.
